Serialized in: Big Comics (Shogakukan)
1993-1999

A close-knit family consisting of a young teenage girl named Miyuki Umino and her 3 younger siblings are poor but living a content life. That is, until the day a sleazy duo of ‘businessmen’ representing a shady corporation dump the runaway Umino elder brother’s massive debt upon the family. Burdened with a staggering 250 million yen debt, Umino has little choice but to quit school to focus on repaying the deficit. With the Yakuza businessmen shadowing her every move, Umino decides to re-enter the world of professional tennis! It seems that Umino was once a highly-promising tennis junior but stopped before her tennis career had even begun. As Umino begins training for her first tournament, old friends and foes rise to the surface as rapidly as her neglected skills return to her.

Some rivals become fans of the immensely determined Umino, while other rivals become insanely jealous of her winning ways. Along the way, Umino strives to distance herself from the manipulative ways of the Yakuza, her tennis coaches and manager while fighting her way through legions of players seduced by her nemesis – another gifted young player known as Choko who is everything Umino is not - a sexy, rich, famous and haughty spoiled tennis prodigy. Join Umino in her struggles to pay off the family debt, her adventures in love and her quest to dominate the professional tennis world!

As with everything mangaka Naoki Urasawa writes, this is not your typical shonen sports manga. There are no bishounen, no forgone conclusions, no super-human opponents. Urasawa once again creates a living, breathing universe filled with real life-like characters – witness the slow, gradual change of heart in the bumbling low-level Yakuza ‘thugs’ following Umino, which is sharp contrast with their shark-like corporation ‘boss’ who sees Umino as another object to manipulate and exploit. While less humorous than Yawara and not as keenly written as his later Monster and 20th Century Boys, Happy! is another worthy addition to the archives of the talented Naoki Urasawa.

Happy! is a 23 volume series that ran from 1993 to 1999 in Big Comic Spirits.
