| Series Summary |
Serialized in Shounen Sunday (Shogakukan).
Like any number of Adachi's manga, H2 revolves around high school students, their involvement with the sport of baseball, and their relationships with one another. At the outset, we see two old middle school friends, KUNIMI HIRO and TACHIBANA HIDEO, whose lives rapidly diverged after middle school. Both were once acknowledged prodigies: Hiro for his pitching and Hideo his batting. Hideo's future is rosy, a star among the stars of Meiwa high school's prestigious baseball club. Hiro, on the other hand, was benched for good when a local doctor's prognosis spelled doom for his arm should he continue pitching. In an effort to cut his ties with the sport, Hiro goes on to Senkawa High School, which has no official baseball team. Other old friends also parted at the start of high school. Joining Hiro in this baseball-less limbo is Noda, a catcher with whom Hiro once formed a formidable "battery". Noda, too, had received a gloomy prognosis (from the same doctor) which ended his baseball career. AMAMIYA HIKARI, Hiro's childhood friend for whom he once shared an unrequited love, had instead decided to go to Meiwa High School to be with her boyfriend Hideo. Though heartbroken, Hiro soon finds his interest captured by a new girl, KOGA HARUKA, the hapless manager of Senkawa's enthusiastic if lacking baseball club (not team). The story follows the lives of both set of two H's (the boys, Hiro and Hideo; the girls, Hikari and Haruka). As old assumptions are shattered and new relationships are forged, old ties are broken and redefined. Their fates intertwine as they all head for an explosive climax at Koshien, the championship of high school baseball. Those familiar with Adachi will see that the author reuses many of the story elements in and from his other works. Koshien, high school, and love triangles all figure in H2 as it does in many other Adachi manga. Situations are often transparent in their setup, such as a sudden summer shower forcing Hiro and Hikari to spend a night together. Metahumor abound, such as the author's self-reference and exhortation to buy his manga, which can become trying. Like the story elements, Adachi's drawing style does not vary overly much from manga to manga. Characters are drawn in similar ways (to me, the main protagonist always look the same but for the hair). Details range from hyper-realistic depiction of buildings and clouds, to the characters themselves who often look simple and a bit shapeless. The art is clean and dynamic, especially when it comes to baseball. The author's strongest points are subtlety, mood, and sensitivity. Panels with action and dialog are interspersed with silent panels depicting place and weather. Though the wordless panels often slow the pace (there are a LOT of buildings and clouds), they provide a good setting for proceeding scenes. People's expressions do not always match inner thought and emotion, as a placid look or a smile may very well conceal inner turmoil. The characters often talk around a subject, especially when it comes to romance and regrets. The humor is situational, arising from misunderstandings and chance encounters. So if you are looking for a typical shonen manga of gratuitous sex and/or violence, you will be disappointed with H2. If you are looking for a good dramatic story of romance, rivalry and wry humor, you should definitely check this manga out. Submitted by miloconway Information last updated on Mar 31, 2008 |
