| Series Summary |
When reading Penguin Brothers, by Shiina Ayumi, I was reminded of Imadoki or Hana Yori Dango, where class distinguishment is a major focus of the story. In Tokiwa Secondary Academy, there are three groups of students: The White, the Black, and the Gray. Classrooms are split, fights are fought between the White and Black, and generally, the school is a site of war.
Our heroine, Mishima Hina, is a brand new transfer student to Tokiwa Academy, and was very certainly confused when she arrived at the school for a tour. The teacher showed her around gave her no explanation as to why there were 'different uniforms' (as opposed to the school information sheet saying no uniforms). So, Hina is left clueless until she meets an extraordinary character, Gray Koshiba Tetsuta, in a laughable manner. Koshiba explains that there is strange sort of classification that has been around the school for as long as anyone could remember. The Whites are people with high academics, lead by the clean freak student council president Isshiki Shoui, and the Blacks are people are people who do not care for school very much, lead by a very violent Nishizaki Kaito. Grays are a minority, they wear normal clothes and are the victims of bullying by the other groups. No one knows why or how the school became to be this way. So, being the caring righteous girl she is, Hina decides to become a Gray to change the ways of the school. This shoujo manga is definitely worth your time reading! The characters are very cute and lively, and the art is refreshing. It may sound like a typical shoujo, but something about it makes it stand out from the rest. |
